    If I have a lot of animated films, be it 2d or 3d, is there any value to setting the encoder tune to animation versus film? Or is it best to leave it at film?

    This is a great and useful video! Thank you for making it. I really appreciate the explanations of the advanced settings in the video description. I have the video saved in a playlist and I will come back to it when I get around to encoding 4k remux's. I'm currently just encoding 1080p blu ray remux's at the moment. The end file size you got for your 4k remux is better than most of my 1080p encodes lol. I have some questions regarding some settings choices if you have some free time and don't mind answering. 1. You left cropping to Automatic. I've been doing Conservative. I think there is a very minor difference between them but just wondered if there was a reason you didn't go Conservative. 2. You done h265 for video encoder. What's your thoughts on AV1? I know h265 is better supported currently but perhaps long term it'll get better and maybe space savings over h265? 3. You chose constant frame rate over variable. Could that not be an issue for a film like Avatar: The way of water, which I believe changes frame rate during scenes? 4. In the audio tab you set the sample rate to 48. I have been wondering what the sample rate means, but I can't actually find an answer to this in any forums.

    Hi! Which one is better for 1080 resolution, H265 or H264?

    • @thewebernets
      @thewebernets 2 місяці тому

      Hi, in short, H.265 is a better code. It is more compressible. However, it takes a lot longer to encode and is harder on your system. Both codecs can provide excellent results so you need to look at your equipment to help you decide. If you have a more recent computer with lots of power, and a compatible media player and tv use H.265. If your computer is older or you want the encode faster, and have an older media player and TV use H.264. You will get extremely good results if you follow my videos on either codec. Hope this helps

  • @lazinggu2051
    @lazinggu2051 3 місяці тому

    To rip DVD to H.265, you can use DumboFab DVD Ripper. 1. You're not suggested to adjust frame rate, if not necessary. 2. Lower the resolution. Typical DVD videos are 720×480 (NTSC) and 720×540 (PAL). Adjust the resolution to 640×480 won't make any quality difference. 3. Lower the bitrate to a lower level. For example, adjusting the original 2500 to bitrates of around 1800-2000 is acceptable without noticeable pixellation.

    Thank you for the informative video! I have a few questions though: 1. Filters: You've left "Interlace Detection" and "Deinterlace" at the default "decomb" setting. Is this because your Blu-ray file is interlaced? Why not turn these options off? 2. Colorspace: I’m interested in encoding videos that will be compatible with both HDR-capable and non-HDR TVs. Which setting would you recommend to ensure broad compatibility? 3. Encoders: In your video, I see you can choose "AV1" as the encoder. Could my inability to select AV1 be due to not having a compatible graphics card? I currently have an RTX 3060. 4. Rate Factor (RF): You chose an RF of 24 for your encoding. Could you explain why you prefer this over a slightly higher quality RF of 22? 5. Bit Depth: Is there a noticeable improvement in video quality, color depth, or file size when encoding an 8-bit video using the "H.265 10-bit" encoder compared to "H.265 8-bit"? Or should I tend to use 10bit to encode my 8bit videos? 6. I also don't find the option “Passthru Common Metadata”. 7. What does this code in the "Advanced Options" do exactly? Should I throw it in for all my encodes regardless of specifications of the media? Using latest Nightly-

    • @thewebernets
      @thewebernets 3 місяці тому

      Hi, Great questions: 1: Deinterlace is automatic with these settings, so if interlacing is not detected, no filtering is applied. Its a "one setting fits all" kind of solution. Feel free to turn it off if you want to perform the extra steps. 2: It all depends on your hardware. If your TV and player all support HDR go with that, it looks a lot better. 3: I chose H.265 10Bit, not AV1, but yes if your graphic card doesn't support them, features like NVENC or QuickSync won't be available for selection 4: The goal of these tutorials since I started writing them in 2014 was "Best quality at smallest file size". For my eyes and system RF 24 looks great and gives a smaller file size. If you are happier with the results at RF22 go with that. 5: Keep in mind these setting are for 4K - But yes, In my testing I have noticed 10 bit gives a much nicer encode, especially in dark scenes. Artefacts/noise and blocking seems greatly reduced using 10 bit 6: Can't explain that, maybe try the latest stable release instead of nighties 7: In short, it makes the videos look a great deal better by tweaking aspects of how the encoder works. If you want to know in detail what each argument does, have a look in the description of the video.

    What would happen if the constant quality were turned up further? Would it be easily noticeable at all, or effect the video size much?

    • @thewebernets
      @thewebernets 3 місяці тому

      Constant quality can make or break an encode, and it's different for every system. Videos I compressed 10 years ago that looked gorgeous on my 42 1080P TV look AWFUL now on my 75" 4K TV because I pushed the CQ too far. Gee I think I was using 26-28 in those days. But to answer your question, yes, you can reduce the file size significantly, but the quality suffers. Compressing video is always a sliding scale between file size vs quality. You just have to find that sweet spot for your system. Great question!

    • @thewebernets
      @thewebernets 3 місяці тому

      Hola, gran pregunta. 5.1 significa que tienes 5 altavoces satélite y 1 subwoofer. Generalmente los 5 satélites son un delantero izquierdo, un altavoz central de donde salen las voces, un delantero derecho, luego un trasero izquierdo y un trasero derecho. Ese es el 5. Luego tienes un subwoofer para bajas frecuencias, y ese es solo uno, así que junta esto y tienes 5.1. No he visto ningún video 4.1, ¿tal vez eso no incluye el canal central para las voces? Prácticamente todas las pistas de audio Dolby Digital y DTS que encuentres serán 5.1, o incluso 7.1. 7.1 significa que también tienes dos altavoces laterales además del 5.1. Gran pregunta y espero que esta respuesta sea clara para ti.

Even all so-called "4K UHD" discs are actually UHD, not 4K. Blu-Ray resolution is FHD (Full High Definition; a misnomer, because there are greater resolutions, now), at 1920 x 1080 UHD (Ultra High Definition) is 3820 x 2160 4K (Literally standing for four thousand pixels) is 4096 x 2160 "4K UHD" discs are UHD, because their resolution is 3820 x 2160, not 4096 x 2160. (The same with UA-cam's resolution, despite their claims of it being 4K.) Only movies at cinemas are in 4K. "4K UHD" discs may use a blue laser to read the discs, but their name isn't "4K Blu-Ray", because those are two different formats in two different resolutions.

      The same could be said of DVD, is it 480 or 576? I've spent a lot of time in the past drilling down into these kinds of details as well, and it results in a lot fewer likes on your videos :) I try to keep things as general as possible so it is digestible for a broader range of viewers. Thanks for your comment.

    For the speed of encoding which brand do you think is the best Intel I9 or AMD R9, I currently have a Ryzen 5 5600H on my laptop and I would be interested in buying a mini pc with a powerful processor 32 GB Ram in DDR5 , would there be a real saving of time or not thank you.

      If you have an Nvidia graphics card it can often do the encoding much faster than a processor!

      I can't answer with any great authority as all my testing is CPU based, but I have been hearing good things about Quick Sync, so maybe have a closer look at Intel

    Is there anyway to know the estimated file size like in the premiere pro app but adobe's app doesn't open the file it shows unsupported compression format no matter what i do i have tried so many solutions. I'm using handbrake is there any way to know the estimated file size after encoding? How much would it be?

    • @thewebernets
      @thewebernets 3 місяці тому

      Hmmm. If you want to know the file size after encoding you can right click on it and select properties, or Get Info if you are on a Mac, or use MediaInfo. Im assuming you mean the estimated file size BEFORE encoding. I don't think there is an accurate method, and even Premiere Pro's Media Encoder gets it wrong usually. Every frame has a different level of compressability. You will find an episode of the Family Guy will always compress considerably more than an episode of your favourite sitcom of the same duration. Handbrake doesn't know what kind of video it is compressing, so it can't really tell you with any accuracy what the final file size will be.

    Personally I use the Staxrip program which I have been doing my video reencoding for a while, I recently upgraded my PC from a Phenom II x4 945 to a Ryzen 5600g and the speed is much faster, now I use the x265 experimenting trying to get the best quality on the less space, the problem is always the time the encoding takes, these days I am testing the x265 from AMD and by moving some things I have achieved an encoding speed of 173fps for a 1080p video at 60fps, but it still does not convince me the quality obtained, do you have any advice to improve the compression of this codec by GPU? I liked the video, it indicates many things about handbrake, I stopped using it a long time ago because it does not have video filters, noise reduction and other things that Staxrip does have.

      I haven't tried Staxrip, but there are definitely some useful filters on the "Filters" tab in Handbrake that you can use to clean up your videos

      The same argument could be made of video couldnt it? What if I have 7.1 channels and am watching my movies on a laptop with stereo speakers? Wouldnt it be wise to save gb's of space and compress it down?

    • @stefans.6858
      @stefans.6858 4 місяці тому

      In the past I did this and then when I got Dolby Atmos I said to myself: Why? So if you are into quality you would never want to make this trade off for some GB in a world of 22 TB HDs. And audio is not saving much at all. And what you got you got. And for Video it is much harder to notice differences, even for me. But I hear instantly the differences.

    Perfect tutorial. I used the transcoded video on my jellyfin server. Works great with intel transcoding. Only downside to this method is, like you said, that ist takes AGES to transcode 4K movies. Mine took over 26 hours on my potato workstation. Still, totally worth it.

    on recent films it is so compressed that there are problems with fluidity, artifacts and other problems 2 GB at 2700 Bitrate :O For a Remux 65 GB 71100 Bitrate, Optimal for weight not quality

      Its always a sliding scale between size vs quality. Better encodes generally equals bigger file size. You have to find the sweet spot that you can live with

    Great video! Why mkv vs mp4? I have some large mkv files…how should I reduce their size? All are 1080 and most are Blu-ray. Some are web.

    • @thewebernets
      @thewebernets 4 місяці тому

      Im glad you like the video. I always recommend MKV because it can handle PGS subtitles, MP4 cant. If you want to reduce the size of Bluray files these settings should help significantly

    • @notthesnail
      @notthesnail 3 місяці тому

      mp4 can only handle one subtitle track, and it is either on or off all the time. The watcher cannot select this. With mkv, you can have multiple subtitles that the watcher can choose. This is nice when you have a track for just small bits of foreign language (forced) that you can turn on by default in the encode, as well as a full track for while the kids are sleeping or when they're especially noisy. And if you have a low power server, you can have text subtitles instead of bluray format image files, which are much less taxing to transcode.
